Research and development – information in support of decision-making

The Ministry of the Environment directs and finances research and development activities that support the operations and decision-making of the environmental administration. The operations are coordinated by the Research Director and the Research Team.

Research themes and funded research

The key research topics of the ministry include

  • climate change and protection of the air
  • the Baltic Sea, inland waters and aquatic resources
  • consumption, production and natural resources
  • ecosystem services and biological diversity
  • built environment, land use and housing.

The Ministry of the Environment is in charge of the national operations of Life, the EU financial instrument for the environment. Life projects aim at transforming promising research results into concrete environmental benefits.

Research and development operators in the ministry's administrative sector

The Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) is the environment administration's research institution, investigating changes taking place in the environment and nature, their causes and consequences.

The Research Consortium for Natural Resources and the Environment (LYNET) operates in the field of natural resource and environmental research, acting as a competence and service unit and centre for research, expertise and information resource management.

The Ministry of the Environment's administrative sector also includes the Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland (ARA). ARA participates in development and research projects related to housing development and expertise in the housing markets, while providing information services for the sector. The ministry steers ARA's research.
