Habitat III Conference of the United Nations on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development will be held in Quito, Ecuador, from 17 – 20 October 2016. The aim of the Conference is to create a global New Urban Agenda to address problems relating to uncontrolled urbanization and identify solutions for sustainable urban development.

The Conference is one of the major UN events in the coming year, with expected attendance of more than 50 000 people. The meeting is the third of its kind: Habitat I was organized in 1976 in Vancouver, Canada and Habitat II in 1996 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Conference is prepared by the Habitat III Preparatory Committee (PrepCom), with support from the wider YK organization. Finland’s participation in and contribution to the Conference is prepared by a committee appointed by the Ministry of the Environment, with broad stakeholder involvement.
