While everyone has the right to enjoy a good cultural environment, at the same time we all have a responsibility to care for our environment sustainably. This is why we challenge everyone to take action for the betterment of the cultural environment. Making a cultural environment commitment is also a great way to gain visibility for your activities.

What is a cultural environment commitment?

A cultural environment commitment is a promise made by a company, organisation or private individual to commit to changing their operations according to the objectives of the Cultural Environment Strategy and the principles of sustainable development. Each commitment includes objectives, indicators and a schedule for the work that are defined by the party making the commitment.

The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Education and Culture have made a commitment under Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development, a national initiative to achieve sustainable development, to carry out the implementation plan of the Cultural Environment Strategy. Further, the ministries are challenging other parties to make their own commitments to sustainable development for the purpose of contributing to the implementation of the strategy.

What can a cultural environment commitment entail?

A cultural environment commitment could take the form of organising a city block cleaning bee, repairing a building in a manner that respects cultural historic values, organising an excursion with family or friends to become familiar with the local environment, maintaining a field to keep it open, or arranging an event to enrich suburban life.

A commitment can consist of almost anything, as long as it contributes to the objectives of the Cultural Environment Strategy and follows the principles of sustainable development. Remember, every commitment is important.

How do I make a cultural environment commitment?

Make your commitment on the commitment2050.fi website by first navigating to the cultural environment commitment page of the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Education and Culture and then clicking the +Branch out button

The commitment2050.fi website allows cultural environment commitments to be linked to each other. Each commitment has a main goal from the list of sustainable development goals, as well as potential other goals that the commitment contributes to.

The progress of the commitments is followed and supported by the Finnish National Commission on Sustainable Development, the general secretariat and the expert panel. Additional monitoring of the cultural environment commitments is done by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Education and Culture.

How can I share my commitment?

Once you have made your own commitment, we recommend sharing it as widely as possible — and challenging your partners and acquaintances to make their own commitments.

Each commitment is published on the commitment2050.fi website, through which links to the commitments can be easily shared on social media. Please use the hashtags #ourculturalenvironment and #sitoumus2050 when sharing links.

The Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Education and Culture share information about new commitments through their own media channels, such as the kulttuuriymparistomme.fi website, the Ympäristö magazine and other websites and social media.

The communications material on the commitment to sustainable development can also be used freely.
