Sustainable City - new programme aims to build the cities of the future

The Sustainable City programme is accelerating sustainable development through practical urban development and city management. The main themes of the programme are carbon reduction, smart solutions, health aspects and social development. In particular, the programme seeks out solutions to challenges that both connect these themes and fill in the gaps between them.

The programme is part of Finland’s work to implement the UN’s New Urban Agenda approved in 2016, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Urban Agenda for the EU.

The programme is being implemented according to the principle of experimental culture using means such as pilot projects. The objective of the activities is to solve the shared sustainability challenges facing cities and municipalities, to support cities and municipalities in their pilots and experiments, to disseminate good practices and advance their implementation at a broader scale, and to strengthen international collaboration aiming towards sustainable urban development.

The implementation of the programme is coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment. Cities, municipalities, other ministries and other sustainable urban development operators are also taking part in the cooperation.
