Press release 2013-07-12 at 10:30

Today on 12 July, Minister of Housing and Communications Piia Viitanen opened the Housing Fair in Hyvinkää by highlighting the importance of digitalisation and technology to the future of construction, housing and the development of residential areas. According to the minister, the utilisation of technology must be based on a strong relationship with citizens and everyday living.

”It is not only important that citizens be able utilise all the information and technologies available to them, but also that they themselves produce information that can be utilised further, for example, to identify and reduce traffic congestion,” the minister highlighted.

According to the minister, future housing and construction will benefit not only from fast telecommunications, but also from numerous other emerging technologies, such as computer modelling, 3D printing and nanotechnology.
”Buildings will become increasingly intelligent: when designed and built correctly, they will be energy-efficient, acoustically sound, fire-safe and protected from moisture. Even today, buildings can be outfitted with a wealth of sensors for analysis and prediction. Our visions for the future include technologies that facilitate life and manage peoples’ access to different areas, providing increased security,” the minister said in her opening speech.

Employment and better housing through renovation construction

In addition to talking about the significance of intelligent construction, Minister Viitanen also reminded fairgoers about the importance of renovation construction. Suburbs in particular contain numerous building in need of renovation.

”I will propose various measures to be included in the supplementary budget, through which we could not only support Finnish employment, but also contribute to the renovation of our suburbs. Such measures would benefit us all,” she emphasised.

A few weeks ago, the Minister of Housing revealed the ”Viitanen Suburban Five”, five perspectives on the development of suburbs. One of her central focus points is the renovation and supplementary construction of suburbs.
