Minister Krista Mikkonen: We will do our utmost to ensure the COP25 will take place

Press release 2019-10-31 at 12:56

“It is very unfortunate that Chile will not be able to host the UN Climate meeting as planned. As the holder of the Presidency of the EU Council, will do our utmost to ensure that the COP25 will take place,” says Finnish Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Krista Mikkonen.

“We fully understand the reasons behind Chile’s decision. The next steps now lie with the COP Bureau, which needs to explore and assess possible options for venues and dates, and the size and format of the meeting.”

Poland currently holds the COP Presidency, and Chile will hold the next Presidency.

“The decisions taken yesterday have not affected this and we continue to look to Chile for their leadership at the political level. The EU is firmly committed to multilateralism and climate action.”

According to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a conference of parties is held annually. The key topics planned for the discussions in Chile included the rules for the Paris Agreement on market mechanisms and the review of the Warsaw mechanism on loss and damage. A decision on the next host for the COP26 must also be made as a COP decision.
