The Arctic Biodiversity Congress and the Arctic Environment Ministers’ meeting in Finland


Finland is the Chair of the Arctic Council in 2017-2019. As part of Finland’s Chairmanship programme, two high-level environmental meetings were held in Rovaniemi, Finland in October 2018.

11-12 October 2018: The Arctic Environment Ministers’ meeting (AEMM)

The main themes of the Ministerial meeting were climate change, biodiversity and pollution prevention. The objective of the meeting was to explore common solutions to these important issues. Organized for the first time in five years, the Arctic Environment Ministers’ meeting gathered delegates from the eight Arctic States and six Permanent Participant organizations representing the indigenous peoples of the Arctic. The meeting was hosted by Mr. Kimmo Tiilikainen, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Housing of Finland.

9-12 October 2018: The Arctic Biodiversity Congress

The Arctic Biodiversity Congress convened over 450 scientists, indigenous peoples, policy-makers, government officials, industry, academia and civil society representatives from 26 countries discussing critical issues and showcasing solutions related to safeguarding the Arctic environment. Jointly organized by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council, and the Ministry of the Environment of Finland, the Congress was be opened by Mr. Sauli Niinistö, President of the Republic of Finland, and featured keynotes from prominent experts in Arctic science and policy, and global environmental cooperation.

In addition to the official Congress program, there were several side events and releases throughout the week, including the Arctic Youth Summit, the Arctic Biodiversity Through the Lens photography competition exhibition, the release of the latest Arctic Ocean Acidification report, and more.
