Climate and air

The climate measures of the Ministry of the Environment are aimed at keeping greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that prevents dangerous changes and enables adaptation.

The objective of climate protection is air quality that safeguards a safe, comfortable living environment and allows nature to function normally. As for ozone protection, its purpose is to ensure that the ozone layer in the stratosphere provides protection against harmful UV radiation.

Climate change calls for mitigation and adaptation

The Ministry of the Environment is active in all climate policy arenas in order to mitigate climate change. National mitigation of climate change in all areas of society is guided by the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Paris Agreement, and by the climate policy of the European Union.

Along with mitigating climate change, adaptation to it is also necessary, because global warming is inevitable even though emissions are being reduced. The Ministry is responsible for climate change adaptation measures in its administrative branch, particularly concerning land use, construction and buildings, safeguarding biodiversity and environmental protection.

Protection of the climate and the ozone layer

Healthy, breathable air, a pollution-free troposphere and the UV-protective ozone layer are indispensable parts of a healthy, comfortable and sustainable living environment. The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for climate and ozone protection in Finland through its political decision-making and in the guidance of its administrative branch. It also participates in international cooperation for strengthening conservation measures both in the European Union and globally.
